Kim Vân Kiều tân tập

Image
“Kim Vân Kiều Tân Tập” was originally named “Đoạn Trường Tân Thanh”, however its’ most popular name is “Truyện Kiều” or the “Tale of Kiều”. It is a famous poem from the classical Vietnamese literature written in Nôm by the great poet Nguyễn Du (1766-1820). Few people know that Truyện Kiều was based on “Kim Vân Kiều,” a largely forgotten Chinese novel, written by Thanh Tâm Tài Nhân. It was the popularity of Truyện Kiều that intrigued and motivated a Chinese scholar to dig through his own country’s works in order to rediscover a work which had been buried in obscurity from the end of Qing dynasty until the 1950s. According to some theories, Truyện Kiều appeared after Nguyễn Du came back from a diplomatic mission to China (1814). Others have said that Nguyễn Du wrote Truyện Kiều when he held a governmental position in Quảng Bình (1809). Since then, it has drawn strong interest from readers not only in Vietnam but also from all around the world.
